The Restorative Practices in Schools and Communities Trainings June 15-26, 2020 in Bemidji, Cloquet and Crystal Registration is now open! The Minnesota Department of Education School Climate Center is offering two weeks of Restorative Practices training in three locations in Minnesota: Crystal, Cloquet and Bemidji. Restorative Practices are approaches based in Indigenous knowledge that schools can use to improve school climate, encourage youth voice and as an alternative to exclusionary discipline. The trainings are open to anyone who works with youth, in or out of schools. Schools are encouraged to send a team to the trainings. Individuals are welcome. There are sessions for people who are just beginning their exploration of restorative practices as well as sessions to help experienced practitioners hone their practice and deepen their knowledge. The Minnesota School Psychologist Association would like to share a professional development opportunity at the 8^th annual MinneSLIFE conference, being held at Hamline University, on March 21^st, 2020.  Registration is free for those who would like to attend and learn more about our Students with Limited or Interrupted Formal Education.

Recently, the criteria for SLIFE has changed meaning more school psychologists and special education teams will be encountering, making interventions for, and assessing this group of students. Participants will learn what the new criteria are and information to consider when serving our SLIFE population.

The session and the lunch will be held at the UW-River Falls Hudson Center (2501 Hanley Road, Hudson, WI 54016) in Room 200B.

She has written extensively on Native American and environmental issues. Joe Feagin, Ella C. McFadden and Distinguished Professor at Texas A&M University, does major research on systemic racism, classism, and sexism issues. He has published 70 scholarly books in these research areas, including The White Racial Frame Saturday morning's plenary will be an adapted version of "American as Curry Pie" presented by Aamera Siddiqui of Exposed Brick Theatre who will also facilitate dialogue about the performance experience.

BICA Training - Special Education Law - Section 504 Workshop

This training will be available in person and/or live on line.

Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 is a civil rights act that prohibits discrimination against students on the basis of their disability.  Section 504 protects all students with disabilities; those covered by the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) and those who are not in special education.  Section 504, like the IDEA, requires that educators deliver a free appropriate public education (FAPE), which is often accomplished by having school-based teams develop Section 504 plans to deliver a FAPE.  The purpose of this presentation is to explain the requirements of Section 504 and describe how the law affects issues such as discipline and bullying.

Participants will learn:

·         Requirements of Section 504

·         How the law affects issues such as discipline and bullying
